“This Is Public Health” Discussion Board
Public health initiatives are all around us. Please watch the following YouTube video made by students at the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. The sticker campaign helps to identify the public health issues that are part of everyday life and all around us in our communities.
Then, in a group of no more than four people or individually, take a photograph of a public health issue. Make sure the photograph captures your face(s) along with the public health issue and the sign “This is public health.” (Download the “This is public health sticker”, and click and drag to move it.) For iPhones, a free app is available to download; it allows you to digitally put the sign on the photograph. Whether or not you work in a group, each of you should post your photograph and include in the post your own definition of public health, and identify which of the six public health responsibilities would address the issue in your picture. Limit the length to 100 words, please. For review, the following is the format for this discussion board:
- Post a photo of a public health issue with your smiling face(s) and the sign “this is public health” in it. Identify all those who are in the picture that you post.
Explain in one sentence why this is a public health issue, and identify which of the public health responsibilities it falls under:
Public Health Responsibilities
- Prevent epidemics and the spread of disease
- Protect against environmental hazards
- Prevent injuries
- Promote and encourage healthy behaviors
- Respond to disasters and assist communities in recovery
- Ensure the quality and accessibility of health services
- Read the postings of those in your discussion group and thoughtfully respond to at least 2 other classmates about the importance of their issue, an experience you have had, or constructive thoughts about their submission.
